An Austrian born in Cologne, Germany. With his wife Astrid, an archtitect and his 8 year old son, he lives in Innsbruck, Austria.

Professor Dietmar Fries graduated from the University of Innsbruck in 1998. He underwent his residency training in Anaesthesia, intensive care and emergency medicine from 1999 till 2005. He received his Associate Professorship in September 2006. He is currently a staff physician in the Surgical ICU of the Innsbruck Medical University.

Professor Fries main research interest is in the area of volume replacement & massive transfusion in trauma and critically ill patients. He is an active member in several European Societies. He sits in several task forces namely the Coagulation Task Force in the Austrian Society for Anesthesiology, Intensive and Resuscitation (ÖGARI), the Haemotherapy and Shock Task Force in the German Interdisciplinary Society for Intensive Care Medicine (DIVI) and the Perioperative Intensive Care Medicine Task Force in the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM). He is also a member in the Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis (GTH).
